Although it would be awesome if BYU were to go undefeated, it will make me want to throw my computer against the wall to read all the vitriol that will come from many of the same people who are talking it up right now if it doesn't happen. A lot of these folks who are talking themselves into the inevitability of an undefeated season won't be able to handle a loss. Their coping mechanism will be to slam the coaches and players. They'll say they're just venting. I would prefer they didn't let stuff build up inside so much that they have to vent if things don't go exactly according to plan. Or at least that they recognize the fact that the disappointment comes from their own overinflated expectations and not the failure of someone else.
I also am torn about the impact on the team of having so much discussion swirl about an undefeated season. I get that fans talking about something is different than the team focusing on it. That said, when the noise gets loud enough players read their press clippings. Staying grounded and focused on what leads to winning often proves difficult for college athletes. I'd rather we didn't contribute to the potential distraction.
If an undefeated season happens, and I hope it will, it isn't like it won't be fun to enjoy the ride just because we held our expectations in check.
Early in the season, we have no idea how good Texas will be. They may end up winning 3 games all year. Is that unlikely? Yes. But it isn't incredibly far fetched either. I remember '08 before the TCU game. BYU was featured in an article on the front page of the USA Today sports section. I also remember '09 against Florida State. We were riding the wave and highly ranked after beating Oklahoma a couple of weeks earlier. It's a long season. A lot can happen. Including injuries.
Go ahead and talk about an undefeated season. But if it doesn't happen and you unload your frustrations on CB, some of us are going to feel like dishing it right back to you.
