We very well could have kept it up. The first 5 and the last 5 under Bronco are very different. We even followed those wins up with a big recruiting class. Obviously there's no way to tell who will be flops and it's unfortunate the bulk of what made that class great ended up meh.
But coaching issues didn't help. There have been coaching decisions that have set BYU back for years, when yes, they actually could have kept the trend going.
It's not too much to ask for better than we've had the last 5 years. Especially when there were many close but no cigar moments. 2012 defense, yet can't put an offense out there. 2014 offense, yet can't put a defense out there. I think proper preparation and decision making could have kept both a good offense and defense on the field. It's not like we got blown out of the water and just regressed dramatically all over. We've been back and forth with being close, but certain things holding us back. So no, I don't think it's too much to ask for BYU to have been better the last 5. There should be a few more 9-11 win seasons in there, more top 25 finishes, with proper coaching strategies (everything from playcalling, to recruiting, to discipline, to culture, etc) taking place starting in 2009.
It's not unreasonable. Far from being "in denial." Nobody is expecting us to be this top 10 team every single year.
