I know any system we have right now won't be perfect, but I think it's lame RPI is the default rating system looked at when it is so incredibly flawed. Of course I'm biased towards any system that gives local teams I follow a better rating, but when RPI has Kansas as the #1 team in the country and Kentucky #2, you know there's something wrong.
It favors teams with tougher schedules for just playing the game, even if you lose by 50. The other systems dig in and get a better idea of what’s actually going on in games. If BYU played San Jose St. right now and won by 50, their RPI would drop 10 spots. That’s a big deal dropping from the 50’s to the 60’s when it comes to RPI and the NCAA Tourney. SJSU is killing everyone in the MWC’s RPI right now for just having to play them twice.
You can’t believe the difference these other systems have in BYU’s rating. If they were looked at seriously, BYU would be off the bubble in the the tournament.
I'm also showing USU and Kansas' ratings just to the consistency that Ken Pomeroy, Jeff Sagarin, and ESPN BPI have even though they are using different systems to project. With RPI however, it’s just off in left field.
BYU
Pomeroy: 31
Sagarin: 37
ESPN BPI: 27
RPI: 59
Utah State
Pomeroy: 125
Sagarin: 131
ESPN BPI: 129
RPI: 161
Kansas
Pomeroy: 9
Sagarin: 9
ESPN BPI: 8
RPI: 1
