15 footish Great White Shark.
I was safely on a 45' sports yacht, but we idled to a stop where it was at. (We cruised right up to its huge dorsal fin & it never sounded.) It went around the boat once, never more than ten feet from us, & seemed to brush up against the boat once.
I got up to the edge of the boat where it was at & my knees were shaking pretty intensely. It occurred to me if the boat wasn't between it & me I would've stood absolutely no chance--the thing could've easily bitten me in half. I was 15 at the time. Its black eyes appeared soulless & were something fearsome. Something you don't forget. It was at Block Island sound, off Rhode Island's coast about 20 miles.
