there is much more to this story. The CEO is in a lawsuit with his brother and was in the lawsuit before the raise in
wages. The brother was a partner in the business and the partnership went sour. He wants the company split up or to be bought out.
This raise in compensation is a ploy done to prevent his brother from getting a large payout. If the company is unprofitable (or less profitable) for a while, then his brother wins nothing in the lawsuit.
To ignore the lawsuit is to miss the main motivation.
