Some guys who played for him swear by Majerus and some think he is the worst human being ever to walk the planet. It's like parenting, you can't use the same approach to each child and expect the same results. Rose is a much nicer guy than Larry. He got Jimmer more attention and made him a higher draft pick (so more money) than he would have seen under a coach with a tighter leash who made Jimmer pass more and play defense. But it also didn't prepare Jimmer for success in the NBA since you can't stick in the league having just one skill set.
Larry was too tough on some kids and drove them off, but he also got a lot more out of a soft, lazy kid like Kuzma than Rose or others would have.
There is no right answer to being a good coach.
