At some point you stop looking at metrics, and start looking at actual results
Yes, both teams lost in the first round, but St. Mary's lost to a better team. Meanwhile, in the conference tournament BYU got blown out by a fairly average Texas Tech team, while St. Mary's defeated Gonzaga to win a conference championship. BYU was simply not playing as well as St. Mary's in the last month of the regular season, and if they had played head to head it is likely BYU would have lost. Speaking of metrics, our metrics were far worse in February and March than they were in November and December when we were playing cupcakes. We were not a top 15 team, and the only reason we had a winning record in conference is because the Big 12 collectively was down this year. Lucky for us.
