It got even worse this morning when I saw Chander's post that he is off to Kentucky. (Couldn't he have waited until he completed his mission? Did Pope contact him? Probably.) I was sitting in court earlier today perusing CB when the Kevin Young news became official. Now, I want to write a Good Riddence note to Pope - who seemed to go out of his way to screw BYU and burn bridges.
At this point, I don't want Pope to thank BYU. I don't want to hear from Pope again. He did some good things at BYU, but he played us all. When it counted, Pope couldn't do the slightest classy thing by expressing appreciation for the institution that helped prepare him for Kentucky. Instead, he just bolted and began contacting BYU players to go with him (coaches, too, I'm sure). I haven't seen a high profile BYU coach ever act that way in my lifetime.
Anyway, welcome Kevin Young. And THANK YOU to Ryan Smith and Danny Ainge who clearly had a lot to do with this hire, working with TH and Pres. Reese. And kudos to the BYU BOT for getting this done with an insane amount of money. I am expecting other big announcements regarding assistant coaches soon that will also be exciting.
No Good Riddence post needed for Pope. Honestly, just a simple thanks for getting out of the way and providing the vacancy. BYU just got a huge upgrade.
