A kid coming off a sex assault charge that wants to refresh his image would be smart to show association with BYU. If schools even suspect he's under consideration at BYU then their whole approach changes. They no longer need to do much homework on the kids background and moral standing.

Of course... the kid could be lying about a BYU offer.
