Not sure how true this is, but we were taught in Alaska that a griz will usually only attack a human because it believes it is being threatened. Once the threat goes away, the bear usually will go away. Black bears on the other hand, will nearly always run from humans, unless they are hungry and then they will attack and kill their prey, so fight is your best chance for survival.

Of course, Timothy Treadwell might have a different opinion.
