When looking at laptops, I always start here:

Lenovo is always the highest rated non-apple branded laptops, and their thinkpads are top of the line in terms of durability and build. Also check the factory outlets (scratch/dent/refurb) from the other manufacturers. 90% of the time, you can find the exact same laptop as you're looking at in a store or at an online retailer for 20% to 50% off of the standard retail price.
