Just compared their stats. They are very similar
They average nearly the same rebounds and assists per 36 minutes. The only difference is that Malone averaged 3 more points per 36 minutes. One thing to remember is that Karl played 18 season, which is a lot longer than most players. His career stats are much lower than his peak stats due to playing so many years past his prime. He averaged 29 and 11 per 36 minutes in his 4th season, whereas Griffin averaged 24 and 10 in his 4th season. In his fifth season, Malone averaged 31 points per 36 minutes.

I would say Griffin is the closest the NBA has to Malone right now, but I'd say he's in a slightly lower tier than Malone. You could argue that Griffin's numbers are lower because of the era in which he plays. The NBA is much more point guard heavy than it was in the 80's and 90's, when big men reigned supreme.
