Fall Camp Eve
On the eve of Fall Camp I'd like to vent just a little after gorging on pre-camp reports. First, why does Coach Mendenhall have to say things like what this quote that was reported by the Daily Herald: "On Signing Day back in February, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall stated that something the Cougars had learned from 2013 was that they had to get more speed on the field"? He's always glad to give a fresh quote on how little he cares for how many 'stars' a recruit has, or even if they have any. I realize many of those stars get issued from guys who haven't played at the D1 level or coached professionally. However, it doesn't take an experienced hand to see speed. If we want to upgrade our speed it's going to mean getting more of those three and four star guys.

Second, why do we always seem to live on the hairy edge of no depth on the offensive line and corner positions while extending scholarship after scholarship on transfer safetys that barely merit a word in pre-camp write-ups? I realize this year we appear to be unusually well stocked, at least in numbers, at both positions (knock on wood). But that should be the rule rather than the exception.

Last, if the coaches decide to cancel a practice this fall because they've worked the team to the brink of injury and they desperately need a break, can he please avoid saying that 'we're so far ahead of where we hoped to be,' at least until the team has had a season or two of Septembers where they break 0.500 against D1 competition? It'd be refreshing to hear that "the team looks really rough, especially the offense, but they really needed an extra day of recovery time to avoid injury and learn the freakin playbook."

Here endeth the rant. It's officially time to let the pool start filling with refreshing blue kool aid.
