Are you making sure it has good ventilation? Heat is your number 1 enemy. Don't put it on the carpet or on an enclosed shelf in your entertainment center.

I've had my PS3 for over 5 years and haven't had a problem (knock on wood). I make sure it always has good ventilation and I set it up vertically so there is plenty of surface area for heat to radiate out.
