The good and the bad from the game last night
Well, I enjoyed for the most part watching the game last night. Here are some thoughts of what I thought went well and what didn't go well.

The good:

1. Taysom looked great! I don't care how good Christian Stewart looked in practice, he couldn't have outperformed Taysom in this game. Taysom's throws (with one or two exceptions) were very good. He seemed to know when to throw vs. run vs. throw the ball away. He looked really good. I said this last year, and will stick with it that I predict he will have the opportunity to be a top 3 round pick at the end of the year.

2. Our receivers I also thought did a nice job of both receiving and blocking. When we ran, it seemed we were most effective getting the ball quickly to the outside, and I attribute at least some of that success to blocking at the point of attack. Also, Taysom can't have a big night passing without someone to throw to, so they benefited from Taysom's good night.

3. Our defense did a nice job of not allowing scores, even though UCONN was able to have multiple long drives down deep into BYU territory.

4. Our offensive line did a nice job on pass blocking. There were some holds, but no false starts and no sacks!

The bad:

1. What is up with our kicking game? Bad kickoffs, missing a 33 yd field goal, and luckily just getting the ball over the crossbar on the first XP try? I was really disappointed with that and predict that will cost us a game sometime during the season, unless this is just an anamoly?

2. How much did UCONN pay those ref's to make some of those calls? While I recognize that many of the calls were legit, there were three personal fouls that were completely bogus (the PF on Stringham that negated a 50+ yard pass play, and the two PF's on Fua (one where he barely bumped someone on the ground and the fishing reel). Those officials were really out of control with the flags. I really hope that isn't the way college football will be officiated the rest of the year.

3. The interior run blocking for our o-line was not very good. It seemed like when we try to do any type of power running that we rarely got more than 2 yards. It looked to me that the main culprit was that we were just not pushing UCONN off the ball. This will cause us problems in the red zone and could also cost us a game if this can't be fixed. Some might look at the stats and say that we seemed to have a good yards per attempt on rushing, but this is primarily do to the backwards swing passes thrown by Taysom, rather than from conventional run plays.

4. Although our defense didn't give up many points, I was both surprised and disappointed how successful UCONN was at moving the ball both on the ground and through the air. Although I have expected with our starting corners out that UCONN would have some success in the air, I was especially surprised how well they were able to move the ball on the ground using standard running plays, especially in the first half. The fact that UCONN was so successful moving the football kept our offense off the field and limited the amount of points they could score.

Anyone else with thoughts on the game?
