An addicts perspective
I "think" good will come from this. As Mormons, most think that because of their beliefs they and those faithful are immune to things like this. So when it happens to anyone else we say they're weak and if only they believed in the gospel it would have been prevented. Well addiction does not discriminate. Your intellect, wealth, beliefs, and will power will never shield you from addiction. I went through very similar, though without the publicity, as what Max is dealing with. It began as is the case for many in Utah; with prescriptions. We think "my doctors are telling me to take this and it's perfectly legal. Nothing like drinking alcohol like weak people do." Over years it escalated to heroin, cocaine, and needles. I spent time in jail for exactly what Max was caught doin and caught with. In fact I watched BYUs game winning FG be blocked by Burton in 2010 from my jail cell. My point is this; too many people know they are addicted and know they've lost all control. But because they're terrified of what people will think of them, they don't ask for help. No one should EVER b afraid to ask for help, for anything, especially when it will save their life. I know people have said how could this happen to him. But I remember my family saying those same words. The #1 prescribed medication in Utah is a pain killer. That and my own justification is exactly why Utah is among the leaders in RX abuse. The odds of everyone reading this & knowing someone battling addiction is extremely high whether they know it or not. Hopefully our community will come to view addiction with compassion and not condemnation. None of us addicts chose to be an addict. But we absolutely choose to be a fighter or a victim. Many us choose the victim and there's no helping those addicts no matter how much u love them. Truly sorry for the sappy rant but again, this can be a great thing if people take the opportunity to get educated. It's early for me, but That's what I've learned in just my few 5yrs 6months and 16 days of sobriety.
