Add the two army years and Willie would likely have passed Babe in home runs as well. Even with the clear advantage of the Yankee stadium short porch over the polo grounds and candlestick. Babe was a great pitcher, but Mays was an elite defender (12-time gold glove). He also had 300+ steals and over 400 more hits than Babe.
The lack of an integrated league is not Babe Ruth's fault so I don't like to penalize him for that, but it is true that some of the best pitchers and players were not there to compete against Babe Ruth and they were there for Willie Mays. Just a factor to consider.
