Bronco is a great Byu HC except for one thing
I took a little time out from CB over the weekend to keep things in perspective. The Nevada disaster still stings but the emotional impact is beginning to fade. Here's my perspective on bronco and Byu football in general.

I've had numerous interactions with bronco and have always come away impressed with his commitment to Byu and these amazing young men. He is an amazing ambassador for Byu and the church. We would be hard pressed to find another HC who is better at all the off-field responsibilities that come with this unique job.

But that's only part of the job. The most visible part of his job to us fans is what happens on game day and that is where bronco is failing. He has consistently failed to produce results when it matters most to us fans. Bronco is a lousy game day coach.

We expect to never get embarrassed on our home field and it seems to happen almost every year (twice already this season) losing at home to mediocre teams (and paying top dollar to see it) is what's creating the apathy that is most visible in lower attendance at home games.

We want to win big games on the national stage especially when they are on ESPN. Beating Texas was great but we've laid three straight eggs on ESPN for all to see. Too many missed opportunities for national respect and recognition.

We expect to beat our instate rivals with regularity. I live in Utah and interactions with USU and UU fans are a part of my Byu football experience every year. In state games matter - a lot! Lately it feels a lot like the USA in the Ryder cup.

I was excited as I've been in over a decade for football this year. Taysom Hill was on track to become the jimmer of Byu football. Beating Texas early put us into the national discussion. Lots of people were talking about Byu. The stars and planets were lining up for a special season.

It all came crashing down in a mere 60 minutes (plus a pathetic OT) of football in Orlando. Any hope of a special season ended the first week in October when we got embarrassed at home, on national tv by a mediocre in state team and lost our star player for the season just for good measure.

For three straight weeks the on field product bronco has produced has been terrible. The last three games (I would say the last 5 even though we won a couple) have been like watching Groundhog Day. No pass rush. Horrible 3rd down play - especially 3rd and long. Critical penalties. Career days for opposing QB's. Second half meltdowns. No clutch plays. The worst of Byu football on full display. All of this is compounded by Utah winning their big games with clutch plays and catapulting into the national discussion as we sink deeper into irrelevance.

Bronco has done little to stem the tide of on field performance for more than a month. The problems are obvious to everyone yet he and his staff have done little to fix them in fact it's gotten worse.

I'm a Byu guy. That will never change. I can't wait for the next game but I now have tempered expectations. I don't expect to beat Boise. I have no plans to travel to any away games the rest of the year including the bowl game like I have in most years for nearly two decades. I'm more excited for basketball than football because they haven't had a chance yet to crush my excitement.

I'm just tired of football season being over in two months each year. I miss the days where there was something to play for in October and November. I have tremendous respect and admiration of bronco as a man but he's losing me as a fan with the product he puts on the field and the way he manages the games. Throwing the players under the bus after 5 straight games of pathetic defense and three straight embarrassing losses to mediocre teams didn't help.

Time to turn it around or step aside.
