this is one time when i would agree with the word "definitely" when it applies to leadership.

you are right it is about coaches' understanding the better defensive philosophy and inculcating those principles into all program participants, as Steve Fisher has done at SDSU.

Modern stat gurus are learning more and providing more knowledge to coaches every year. This past year, ken pomeroy has pretty much proven that it is unwise to focus on stopping the 3pt shot at the cost of giving up any protection of the rim. As the American Ride guy said at Boom Shakalaka, "defend the 2pt FG!"

If the stat gurus are right, BYU has a poor defensive philosophy and more commitment to work hard at it by the players can only help at the margins and result mostly in frustration.

You have to have the right philosophy. And as it happened in Moneyball for baseball, the improved basketball knowledge is coming from outside of the coaching profession
