Last year, Dave Rose had one of his worst defensive teams he's ever had at BYU (according to kenpom) and was rated 53rd overall (out of 351 teams).

They were actually the 42nd-highest rated FBS school (11 FCS schools ahead of them). BYU football is actually the 34th-highest rated FBS football team this year, according to FEI/S&P+

Last year, BYU lost 11 games (out of 34 games) before the NCAA Tournament - which is like losing 4 football games before the bowl game.

Last year, BYU had some really bad losses at LMU, Pepperdine and Pacific to teams rated at or near the bottom half of all DI basketball schools. They also lost to an above-average Portland team that we were rated much higher than. And this was without injuries to major players.

Despite, all that, BYU got a chance to play for the national championship. Shoot, they even got a much more favorable seed that they deserved.

A three-loss football team with a bad loss or two that's only ranked in the mid-30s among FBS programs with one of the worst defenses in memory (since 2001 at least) gets talk of the head coach being fired and the DC being hailed as an idiot.
