What what it take for you to become the best in the world at what you do?

I saw a program on extremely fine silk and the designers who use it. They had many technical obstacles to overcome but with fanatical love/interest/persistence were finally able to produce the world's finest silk. (Finest = smallest diameter thread size). I wondered what it would take for me to develop that kind of intensity and overwhelming excellence in my respective field of endeavor.

I'd love to hear your ideas on how you'd go about a similar journey...and whether you think it would be worth it.
