That's ridiculous. The Engineering building has raised 46.6
million so far--all of it from private donors.

The President's Leadership Council met last week, and President Samuelson spoke. He literally told Mark Palmer and others to "Get their hands in the pockets of these good people and get that money rasied." He said it facetiously, but there was quite a bit of truth in it. That is why these people are involved. They believe in BYU and it's mission, and they contribute major, major sums of money to back up their talk. Nobody in that room was worth less than $10-20 Million.

The Life Sciences building is the first venture in 2 decades where the majority wasn't paid for by donors. But early on, the Church got involved and indicated that they wanted to put in some major money on it, so 60% of that building was paid for by the Church.

Serious money flows into the athletic department. There have been very, very few exceptions. And those are because the donor wants things that BYU or the Church is simply unwilling to do with the money, and most of those have to do with the promotion of the individual or the company, and even that's normally fine. But when it's a group, company, or person that has questionable motives, ties, or history, well, there is a problem. And that is less than surprising--it's expected.
