My daughter was invited to try out for HS teams last year (for soph team). If she even tried out for HS team - whether or not she made the team, then she couldn't try out/be on the middle school team. We knew she wasn't skilled enough to really see much playing time on Soph team, so we felt it best to let her play with her MHS team. She got lots of playing time and it's now finally starting to show some benefits, almost a year later.
