Friends had lots of that whereas Seinfeld looked to actively avoid such things. The 2nd season episode in which Seinfeld and Elaine get back together was the idea of the network who was looking to boost ratings (i.e. get more women to watch). Once the show established solid ratings, Larry David and Seinfeld completely abandoned the notion of serious relationships in the show.
