RE: Youth soccer question
It's probably a mix of the teammates, their own personalities, and the coach running mini-games that encourage constant aggression. I find that if I run the right drills/games in practice the kids learn to go after the ball 110%.

I don't know of gender matters, but confidence does. If I match up kids with similarly skilled kids they learn to work hard. If the skills are mismatched the lesser skilled players become zombies.
