IMO it's a combination of two things
1.) Time seems to fly by when you are busy. This is especially true for me at work. In a really busy week, Thursday feels like Wednesday. Kids make life busy. Right now, chasing our 4 yr old and 2 yr old, there is ALWAYS a diaper to change, meal to cook, lego to build, etc... I can only assume as kids get older, their life get busier with school and extracurriculars. We are fast approaching the stage of life where you just drive your kids from school to soccer to piano lessons etc...

2.) Mathematically, as we get older, each year represents a smaller and smaller percentage of our lifes. When you are two years old, a year represents 50% of your total life experience whereas at age 40 a year is just 2.5% of your life.

1 yr as a percentage of your age AKA how long a year feels relative to your total life experience

1 yr old = 100.00%
2 yr old = 50.00%
3 yr old = 33.33%
4 yr old = 25.00%
5 yr old = 20.00%
6 yr old = 16.67%
7 yr old = 14.29%
8 yr old = 12.50%
9 yr old = 11.11%
10 yr old = 10.00%
11 yr old = 9.09%
12 yr old = 8.33%
13 yr old = 7.69%
14 yr old = 7.14%
15 yr old = 6.67%
16 yr old = 6.25%
17 yr old = 5.88%
18 yr old = 5.56%
19 yr old = 5.26%
20 yr old = 5.00%
30 yr old = 3.33%
40 yr old = 2.50%
50 yr old = 2.00%
60 yr old = 1.67%
70 yr old = 1.43%
80 yr old = 1.25%
90 yr old = 1.11%
100 yr old = 1.00%
