based on "athletic performance". Doesn't seem strange to me. Did he agree to come as a walk-on? Then he shouldn't ever plan on getting money but should be happy if it comes his way. Kids that walk-on are usually told to come and work their butt off but don't expect $$$. If $$$ comes your way, great. A lot of times others leave or transfer and it trickles down to a walk-on kid that was performing well.
