Let's face some facts (as I see them)...
By all accounts ESPN is currently getting a deal for the inventory they are receiving from BYU (even though they are not necessarily prime match ups).
This "deal" for ESPN is still a "very good deal" for BYU in that they would not make anywhere (AND I MEAN ANYWHERE) near as much in a Go5 conference.
ESPN has been very satisfied with their deal and has maximized on the contract every year. Maximizing ranges from taking additional games beyond the 4 and/or putting all on channels higher than the one they are allowed on ESPNU.
BYU has filled many slots for them with only an elderly gentleman stating "they aren't in the afternoon anymore" as the only push back...actually I'm sure no Sunday's and not the Saturday of GC are also hard criteria...
When the contract comes up again BYU's home schedule will have some top match ups that many networks would be interested in.
ESPN is not the only network trying to compete significantly in that space...Fox/FS1/FX/local FSN channels - NBC/NBCSports/Universal/local Comcast Sports channels - CBS/CBSSports...If an equal offer came through I could possibly see BYU taking it from ESPN without even considering others...but if ESPN came in with a low ball offer given all other information above then BYU could/should/would? talk to another entity to at least get a deal like we are on now.
Several conferences have struck new media rights deals since BYU signed their independence deal. Pretty much everyone of which was an increase over what they had before (even your MAC/CUSA/MWC...) this means the market value has increased on all live college sports.
In my opinion ESPN won't want to let BYU out into a bidding war so they won't low ball...they also won't increase exponentially (like P5 leagues seemed to) and it certainly won't equal P5 TV revenues but then again
Notre Dame doesn't make P5 league TV revenue either.
