The value of offering first is that the kid starts to envision himself going to
that school. By the time a kid hears from other schools he might have become fully invested in school #1. The other factor is that school took the first chance on the kid and took the risk that he'd be a good player, so he may feel some loyalty.

Similarly, it's a detriment to come in late when a kid is inundated with other offers.
