How did BYU not choose Pioneers as their mascot?

Big news in Denver is that the DU Pioneers became the first school west of the Appalachians to win the lacrosse national title. Got me to thinking, what school better than BYU to have the Pioneers as their mascot? Cougars are fine and all, I guess, but Pioneers would have been distinctive.
