I know there are many on here like this, but I like spending my discretionary
income on doing things for others often but it seems to really confuse some people. To the point where they say things that while they don't bug me (you can't offend me) bug my wife. Things like 'well that was a waste of money' etc. Today I'm cooking ribs and pulled pork and salmon and tritip for about 60 people and several people are just confused why I would want to work the whole day and spend a bunch of my own money for it. Specifically it has been women who are the most confused. The same things are said when I put on a fireworks show on the 24th. I guess I just learned early on that when my wife and I were in school with a kid earning less than 20k that we were no less happy than we are now so outside of the money we need for basic activities and some decent travel I find much more enjoyment sharing things with others than I would buying more crap for myself. I sometimes question why I'm wired that way, because it seems weird that I voluntarily signed up to cook for 14 straight hours today and will enjoy it even after I'm exhausted.
