Could the 2015 season play out a lot like the 1991 season?
In 1991, BYU was trotted out a Heisman candidate, senior quarterback who finished the last season injured. (I know that's a bit a stretch, since Detmer was a Heisman candidate because he won the freaking award in 1990, and he was only injured in the bowl game, not the fourth game. But bear with me.) The team was coming off an embarrassing bowl loss, a 65-14 drubbing by Texas A&M.
BYU opened the 1991 season with three games away from LES, facing "P5" teams--Florida State, UCLA, and Penn St. All were losses, leading to the last time BYU started a season 0-3 or worse. But, BYU turned it around against easier competition and didn't lose another game the rest of the season. Unfortunately, they didn't win every game either, but that doesn't fit the narrative as well. Anyway, could 2015 be similar season? BYU returns a dark horse Heisman candidate, senior QB coming off an injury, and starts the season with four tough games, only one of which is at home. Could BYU start 0-3 or 0-4, then win out?
Personally, I think the rest of the schedule in 2015 is more difficult than the remaining games of the 1991 schedule. Also, with all that's gone on with Bronco, Howell, et al., in the past few years, if BYU started 0-3 or 0-4, the wheels would come off. Or maybe they would already be off? Anyway, it was disappointing to start 1991 0-3, but it was also the year after Ty Detmer had one the Heisman, so... you can't complain too much about that.
Anyway, just a few ramblings on a Tuesday afternoon. Here a some fun highlights from the BYU-SDSU game in 1991:
