first $508k (of total $1.1 million) of the contract is guaranteed. So, the Spurs can cut Jimmer at any point up to sometime in January (if I recall correctly), and they'll only need to pay him the $508k. If Jimmer sticks with the team beyond his cut date in January, he'll get the full contract amount.
So, it's not really a deal where he has to "make the team" out of training camp, but on the other hand he could be cut at any time if the Spurs think they've seen enough and they decide Jimmer can't cut it in their system. I think the Spurs are fairly confident that Jimmer can succeed in their system, or they wouldn't have offered the fairly reasonable guaranteed amount. If they were skeptical of Jimmer's ability to play in their system, they probably wouldn't have offered that kind of guarantee, the way I see it. I think the Spurs bought a few months of Jimmer so they can see what he can do in their system. Hope it works out.
