IOWs, we don't follow section 89. Rather, we follow an "understood" health code that we think (& claim) is true to section 89. It most surely is NOT. Yes, it's based on some of what the revelation states--but it entirely disregards the actual spirit & call of the revelation.
Additionally, we really don't read the revelation given in section 89 all too closely. If we did we would--like our forefathers in the faith (both Joseph & Brigham)--see that full temperance as commanded by Joseph F Smith is NOT what is plainly suggested by the revelation.
I realize Joseph F. Smith was a very influential President of the church & that the health code tradition he established is not to be questioned (or else...). However, I don't think it's honest for us to continue calling what he directed the "Word of Wisdom." The "Word of Wisdom" is the revelation given in D&C 89. True to its namesake it is a revelation of wisdom--to be applied in one's life at one's own discretion. Both its name & its plain wording identifies it as something other than a law code.
