I knew a guy who'd done this and I admired him for it.
the first thing he did was buy a two-family house and rented out the other unit . That paid for his existing house, but I would argue it was a sacrifice of his living arrangement. The second thing he did was pick up property in his native country in Central/South America where it was much cheaper and where he visited fairly frequently. Then he slowly began to acquire other properties in the area he lived here in the US.

And yes, the last thing he did was get involved with a MLM, which was a bit of an oddity on the east coast but he's done very well for himself and no, I didn't buy any of his crap.

Dude gets a few checks every month whether he works or not.
