I think that is a big part of why the show was so good. Take a completely
sympathetic character whose initial bad choices are understandable nearly justifiable. Then watch the character's continued bad choices accumulate and evolve, ultimately turning him into a despicable character that you want to see dead. It was a very successful way of causing the viewer to consider that behind any despicable human being may be a former good guy just like you or me. Evil is just like the cancer WW had - a slow and insidious disease that destroys its host like a frog in warming water.
