Deadpool thoughts w/ no spoilers:
First of all, if you're not already aware, Deadpool is not a family-friendly Marvel film. Don't take your kids. It takes its inspiration from earlier Marvel Max comic books which feature extreme violence and language.

That being said, Ryan Reynolds hits this one out of the park. His voice, body language, everything is spot on. He does an excellent job as Deadpool. As many have said, this is the role Ryan was born for. It's great to see Deadpool make fun of his previous failures in the opening scene. Most of the cast does good work. There's no mind blowing acting, but no bad acting either. This film isn't meant to stretch the limits of anyone. It's all fun.

That being said, like many great comedies (which this is), it takes itself seriously enough that the trauma and drama balance the hilarity. The plot is peppered with enough gravitas that the laughs don't start getting old. Unfortunately, at times--and especially in the middle--the laughs start to get missed. Fortunately just as the audience starts to wonder where all the funny went, it returns.

While the film is high on comedy and decent action sequences, it's not without flaws. The story offers nothing original in terms of plot or story. It's a very generic origin story, just more crass and violent and freaking hilarious. The more you know about recent (last 10-15 years) of superhero films, the more you'll laugh. I was very happy that the trailer covered most of the early minutes of the story, rather than spoiling much at all. And some of the best laughs were saved for a fresh audience rather than being seen already in previews.

Fight scenes were frequent and often filled with humor and heavy editing. There is maybe one or two really good sequences of a medium length take, but there's way too much editing for my taste. Not quite Bourne-movie bad, but frustratingly lazy choreography to where the fights never really felt intense or breathtakingly well-shot. There's also the issue with Deadpool's power (like Wolverine) leaving the audience without a real sense of danger.

Overall, I give Deadpool a solid B+ and look forward to what is hopefully a much better sequel with a fresher plot now that the origin is out of the way, but wouldn't mind at all watching it once more in hopes that the comedy stays fresh through a second viewing.
