This is the thing I don't understand . . . if the direction of CFB
is really to go to 16-team superconferences, you'd think that the Big12 would get ahead of the curve and expand by 4 to get the best of the G5/independents now . . . to keep other P5 conferences from snapping them up when that wheel starts to roll.

Don't the current GOR agreements kind of force any further expansion only from the G5/independent ranks? I guess there could be some P5 defections, but the GOR situation makes that seem very unlikely to me.

By going to 14 now, at least the Big12 gets the best of what is and likely will be available during the coming round of superconference expansion. Or is the superconference theory not as viable/attractive as it was a few years ago?
