My 11 year old son and 4 year old daughter walked in on a dude doing Heroin at
the Gateway on Saturday evening.
My oldest daughter had a Lacrosse game at Spenc. Eccles Field House on Saturday. We got up to SLC and headed toward the UofU. We got a few blocks in when we realized we left her stick in Orem.
We didn't have time to go all the way back. Dick's Sporting Goods was the closest place that would have one that we knew of. I swung back west to the Gateway and parked (on the entirely wrong end of the mall of course) and went to the main level.
I have never been to the Gateway before, so 15 year old daughter and I start looking for the mall directory.
4 year old needs to go to the Bathroom, so I have 11 year old son take her while we figure out where we are and where Dick's is.
Anyway, we figure it out and Son and 4 year old come back and we start running to the other end of the mall. On the way the 11 year old says, "Someone was doing Steroids in the Bathroom."
I say, "Huh? OK..."
He says, "The girls bathroom was empty, so we went in there instead."
"That was a good idea."

I can't tell you how awful I feel that I let them get so close to a potentially very bad situation. I go past the Gateway on my way to work every day, so I 100% know what kind of area it is... I was just in a hurry and wasn't thinking they would be exposed to such risk just running to the bathroom.

I am grateful my son is smart and responsible and "Noped" the crap out of there as soon as he saw what was going on...

SLC really needs to do something about the druggie homeless problem in that area. I think it hurts places like the Gateway specifically. I know I won't be heading back there, especially not with my kids. That whole area is awful. My coworker who wants some extra exercise walking from the train to work, goes to North Temple instead of SLC central because it was getting so bad walking through that area. It is a real problem.

Anyway, we made it to the Lacross game just in time... in case you were wondering.
