My freshman yr at BYU, someone asked if I'd been there before. I said, "Oh yes. When I was 10, we drove out west." He
waited for me to go on. When I didn't, he said, somewhat impatiently, "WHERE out west?" I was kind of surprised at the question, and said, "Well, we saw the Badlands, and Yellowstone, and I think we drove past Temple Square." He was appalled that I thought I knew all about everything west of the Appalachians because I'd once taken a family road trip to a couple of national parks.

Yes, it's rather embarrassing to think about how provincial my views were. (But, is it okay that I still think of Canada as that big empty frozen tundra just across the border?)
