Prior to this season, BYU was averaging 9 wins per year since 2007.
Not spectacular, but not exactly "trending down" dramatically, either. BYU's value to ESPN is more about drawing large TV audiences, and BYU does that just fine when the team is winning, even in seasons when they "only" win 8 or 9 games.

To be clear, I'm not saying that BYU football is going in the right direction - I'm saying ESPN is smart enough to look at the big picture, not just one really bad season.
