Okay, some actual data and a bit of inside info about the Kevin Young hire
Got a text from a good friend who knows a couple of things:

- Ainge was very very involved. Ryan Smith and his NBA contacts were very helpful (also his money). Holmoe starting the process of reaching out the second Calipari left. Figured there was a good chance Pope left if things went sideways with Kentucky's process. Young was always his target. One direct quote from the text, "I wish people understood Ryan's commitment to BYU." Apparently, sales pitch was stability and a long leash and various financial commitments for staff, recruiting, facilities, and NIL.

- Was the highest paid assistant in the NBA
- Either was the runner up for the Nets job this week OR turned it down to come to BYU. Conflicting reports
- In a poll of GMs and coaches was the 2nd most respected assistant in the NBA. That's pretty awesome.
- He made his name in the NBA with his player development. He’s also considered an offensive guru. He was the highest paid assistant for a reason.
- $31M for 7 years.
- Sixers fans wanted him as head coach when Brett Brown was fired. Lots of Reddit threads about this.
- If he didn't get a job this cycle, he was going to be an NBA HC soon. Period.
- This is the first coach BYU's had that really has no experience recruiting at a big scale. Will need help in this area.

What I don't know is how/why/if the BOT fast-tracked things and what that process looked like. Pres Reese and Holmoe deserve huge credit. Staff isn't done.

Does this make us a "big boy" school? Honestly I'm amazed right now. (TailgateU, Apr 16, 2024 at 11:51am)
