My son in law was the manager for the team when Pope was an assistant coach. The day after Pope was hired as BYU’s next head coach my son in law dropped into the basketball office to wish Pope good luck. It was a crazy time, lots of media, and others hanging around. The secretary told him there was no way he could meet with Coach Pope, not even for a moment just to say good luck. He was about to leave when Coach Pope spotted him and with a big smile said, “Dude get in here.” The secretary smiled, and my son in law went into Coach Pope’s office. He got a big hug from Pope, and they chatted for 5-10 minutes, as if Pope had all the time in the world. Jerks don’t do things like that!!!
