The reason why the “Steve Young was 8th string, so . . .” discussion doesn’t work for me is that Steve Young in 1982 was
inserted into a system that had cranked out All American QB’s for the better part of a decade before he saw the field. The coaches, O line, and skill players were also pipelines of consistent performance by the time 1982 rolled around.

We . . . don’t have that now. Wide receiver is the only player group that could approach early 80’s performance, and our offensive coaches can’t hold the early 80’s offensive coaches’ whistles. It’s a HUGE gap in talent and football knowledge that means a truly great QB coming out of nowhere is not going to happen.
