Unless we are okay with college sports becoming like MLB (and actually worse)
where the rich get richer and the poor get shut out completely with no protections for these schools that work so hard recruiting, building relationships with and then developing players, only then to see them go to the highest bidders, the following needs to happen:

1) NIL Cap for each team.
2) Contracts for each player.
3) Have to stay in your contract for at least two years before moving on to another team (unless you decide to go pro).
4) If you do move on, and NIL money has been spent on you, then the team that takes you has to pay your current team X amount of the NIL money already spent. This is called a “clawback”. And it will penalize those schools that seem to only focus on the transfer portal.

We are sad to lose Waterman, and rightly so. He was a key part of our team last year and developed nicely while at BYU. And then someone flips a switch, and he’s gone. I don’t blame him one bit. I blame the crazy system that the NCAA has developed. NIL is a joke. Let’s stop dancing around these athletes being amateur and consider them what they are, professionals. And let’s treat them as such with contracts, salary caps, and clawbacks.

Last year we were the recipient of several players from the transfer portal. And we were all excited when we got them. But think about the schools from whence they came. I’m sure they were pretty upset to lose such talent, and I don’t blame them. Under this current system, it’ll be extremely difficult for any small team to make a deep run in the tournament.

Major League Baseball actually has better protections in place for the teams than the NCAA which is one of the most inept institutions out there.
