Agreed. It really is awesome. But...
Quite simply, if the objectives and purpose of an organization are not being met, this "awesome" stuff is just a bunch of feel good fluff that's ultimately nothing but a detriment to the goals of said organization. If BYU's goals ARE geared more toward this kind of awesomeness (that really is undeniable), and football really is manifesting itself as the stated 5th priority (ie. earning a C- grade with a crap schedule in the W/L column), then that is fine. That would still represent "success" in accordance to the organization's priorities. I have no problem with that.

But I'm a competitive person, and athletic competition is one of the outlets I have, which fulfils my competitive drive. If my drive for competition and my interest in seeing successful results on the football field are taking a back seat to the objectives of why football exists, then again, I have no qualms with that. This just isn't my team then. I hope that isn't the case.

Byutx, you were VERY apt in posting the poll about "what it would take" for Bronco supporters to conclude that he was not the man for the job. I learned more about the general Cougar fan base from the responses to that poll than I could have any other way. This is not our father's or grandfather's BYU fan base. My grandfather has to be be rolling in his grave. I don't think I really need to elaborate from there.

I'm afraid BYU athletics are being hi-jacked by a crowd who seem to be enemies of success on the field and scoreboard, as long as they see the uniqueness of the (very noble) BYU experience manifesting itself. I can root for personal development and dedication to service and all that other stuff in MANY different arenas, where contributors to those causes don't involve spoiled and entitled jocks who have their college tuition covered, and enjoy a free meal ticket that few others have granted to them. They simply get a free pass because their god-given athletic abilities provide them that opportunity. If it's a lot more than that, and it involves hard work and dedication to reap these benefits, then let's see that proven on the field of play. Honestly, this is almost becoming a joke. Go team. Trophies for all the good spirited participants. We're all winners as long as we're all super neat people doing super neat things.

Frustrated rant over... lame responses invited.
