How about developing the talent you have? Coach them up? Give them an opportunity to grow, gain confidence, learn?
What has it gotten Kyle Whittingham when he fires his OC every year (or so) and is constantly bringing in new OC's with new schemes? Sure, some guys aren't that good their first year in D-1 basketball. Sometimes they need a year or two or three to grow and develop. What happened to the days when our Coach was patient enough to grow the talent on his bench?
Was Anson Winder a good player as a freshman? Lets look at his stats:
As a freshman he played quite a bit, 16.2 mins a game, but shot only 36.6% from the floor and 29.8% from 3 and avg'd 4.3 pts.
As a sophomore he got even worse (yet Rose didn't kick him off the team) and only played 8.1 mins, shot 38% and 25% and avg'd 2.1 pts
As a junior his minutes climbed back up to 16.7 pts and his shooting improved, 53.9% and 40.3% and avg'd 6.5 pts
After 3 yrs he wasn't sensational by any means but he had become an important rotational player because not only did he have a reliable shot but he was also a really good defender and provided high value off the bench.
His senior year it all came together and he played 25.5 mins, shot 47.7% and 38.5% while avging 12.7 pts.
It took him until his senior year to be a standout player but he started to provide value off the bench in his junior year. If he was playing now he'd likely get run out by coaches because he wasn't good his first year (or his second year).
Dude, players need time to develop and grow, they need to be allowed to play and make mistakes. A player can't go into the game getting ulcers and HBP if they miss a shot or make a mistake. By Beo's junior year I think he would've been a very good rotational player for us. If Rose keeps kicking kids off the team every year we're going to be stuck in the same cycle of not having anybody we can rely on coming off the bench. In the WCC we've seen you gotta have a good bench if you want to do well.
