I saw a lot of similar things at my most recent job.
I worked at a mental health clinic for young adults with mental health problems (BPD, minor schizophrenia, self harm, etc.) which needed treatment but weren't serious enough to be institutionalized long term.

So many clients coming in were outcasts with significant difficulties developing healthy relationships. Most were anxious and very few knew what to expect, but a lot of them bonded over music, sports, and videogames. These bonds over inconsequential subjects helped their adjustment and treatment immeasurably, as well as helping them form healthy friendships.

Some people will always be turds, but some just need to bond over Insane Clown Possy "music" or Wayans Brothers Movies because they've never been able to bond without drugs or risky behavior before.

Edit: A sentence.
