To the contrary, BYU has more resources than most think or realize and coaches are compensated at the market rate of their experience and performance.

Prior to this year we wanted to compare ourselves to P5 programs, and always lamented that we didn't pay as much given our history, which in a lot of ways is comparable to a P5 program. Now that we are P5/4, we will pay P5 salaries because that's the club we're in.

Our coaching pool may be small, and Burgess will probably be one of the lower paid coaches in the Big12 next year. He'll also be the least experienced coach in the Big12. Pope wasn't given the same salary at Kentucky that was offered to the 4 or 5 guys ahead of him. Other coaches were offered $9-12M. Pope got $5.5, and for good reason. If Pope succeeds at UK, he'll get substantial raises. Similarly, if Burgess succeeds, he'll get raises and extensions and get right up there with his Big12 peers pretty quickly.
