Good that you had a background check. I'm still astonished at the amount of
companies that don't do background checks and take the resume at face value.

I'll be with my company 1 year this Wednesday. In the year before I was hired, the President of the company went through 4 controllers.

His first one left after 9 years. She had been with the company at the beginning.

The replacement he got from a job referral company and paid good money for the individual. 3 months later that individual turned in their notice as they had been offered more money somewhere else.

The next individual he hired out of the local classified. Accepted the resume as the truth. It wasn't. That individual had no idea what they were doing. They had listed a lot of experience and he wanted an experienced individual, but none of what they had down turned out to be true. He fired her because he found out that she hadn't done her job as she had said she was going. AR and AP was out of control as well as billings to general contractors.

He had begun procedures to sell the company and that future owner told him to hire the receptionist for the Controller's job. She knew the financial software system pretty good, but she didn't know accounting enough, but never communicated anything to the president. She was adding and deleting constantly. She had set up payroll so no taxes were coming out of her pay and the company wasn't even paying their portion. She one day didn't come back to work. That's when he found out she was not doing the billing, collecting and paying taxes. This president had just gone those 9 years and never worried one bit about the accounting function and then it was a night mare. The company that was going through the process of buying our company suddenly pulled out.

I took over and it was a huge, huge mess. I had an assistant. That was part of the problem. The work had doubled, but he still was trying to get one person to do it all and it physically couldn't be done any more by one individual. Now things are running smooth. We did sell the company last September, but so far that has gone real well. they are an ESOP driven company and very hands-off. It's been great, but never accept someone's resume as the truth and check references. It's important too to have an individual complete an application so that they can be held accountable for what they are saying. It's good to have that signature.

When I interviewed with him back in April 2023, he had called every one of my references on my resume and knew that it was legit and he offered me a job at the end of the interview. I had no intention of taking a job 39 miles from my home, but he was going to pay me significantly more than anyone else had ever paid me, so I took the job.

There was one other individual hired in this process, sometime in 2023. I don't remember the chronology, but he had agreed to pay this person $50k more than what he started me at. It was a ridiculous sum. The guy lived in northern Utah county. On the day he was to report to work, he got about 10 miles from his house and pulled over and called the president and said it wasn't worth the drive and quit before he even started.
